This lake at an altitude of 2,000 meters seems to be calling hikers and promising them refreshment and coolness, thanks to its crystal-clear waters to which it is not possible to resist.

The uphill path does not pose any particular difficulty, in the midst of beautiful larch trees and cushions of blooming rhododendron, as it is well marked and easy to follow.

In the shadow of the east wall of Monterosa, the second highest mountain in Europe after Mont Blanc, developed the first settlements that today are grouped around the village of Macugnaga.

The first people who colonized these valleys came from the nearby Canton Valais in Switzerland in search of new land in which to settle. In time they gave life to communities that remained independent for many centuries, able to survive on agriculture and breeding at over 1300 meters of altitude and in adverse environmental conditions.

Here we are at today’s excursion! Camping Village Conca D’Oro takes you to Alpe Meccia, which was one of the very first temporary high-altitude settlements.

Imagine a vividly colored body of water, surrounded by larch and fir trees and high above the snow-capped peaks that frame the countless roaring streams.

Today we will hike around the Lake Campliccioli walking along the ancient mule track, on a path suitable for families with children. We will pass the rails that were once used for the construction of the dam of Cingino, on whose walls we will walk admiring the lake from a privileged position.

From Cappella Fina we take the dirt road through the woods until we reach the wide pass that marks the point between Val Pogallo and Valle Intrasca.

Did you know that Mergozzo and Maggiore were once a single lake?

Today we are heading to Alpe Vercio, an amazing destination where you can really breathe the geological history of the whole region. This ancient alpine pasture is in fact located in a green and extremely panoramic valley of the lower Ossola valley, which overlooks Lake Maggiore. From up here it is possible to observe the Toce River descending from the high valleys and flowing into the lake waters. The fluvial deposits generated by its passage over the centuries have given life to the vast plain that ended up creating two distinct basins: Lake Maggiore on one side and Lake Mergozzo on the other.

From the top, it is a pleasure to have a snack and look at the mountains surrounding Camping Village Conca D’Oro while picturing the original appearance of our region.

What? You don’t know the Toce Waterfall? Don’t worry, we’ll take you there!

It is, in fact, a must see of our region which Alessandro can’t wait to show you!
We depart for Val Formazza, among the Ossola valleys, the one located more northward, close to the border with Switzerland! It is precisely here, in the locality Frua located at an altitude of 1,675 meters, that the Toce waterfall, with its 143-meter leap, steals the scene from the surrounding landscape.

From the wooden footbridge overhanging the void, you’ll be so close you’ll be able to touch the water spouts with your hand while safely enjoying the view from above! It is amazing that the water that flows creating this spectacular jump is the same which we find downstream, in the placid and tame River Toce, flowing right next to Camping Village Conca D’Oro.

After a lunch with a view and a relaxing break in good company, the excursion starts again in direction of Riale, an ancient village of Walser origin at an altitude of 1,740 meters: through the narrow streets of the village, in the midst of huts and barns of the nineteenth century, just close your eyes and breathe deeply to feel immediately transported to another era.
